On boredom
āThe cure for boredom is curiosity, there is no cure for curiosityā
- Ellen Parr
This monthās bearblog carnival topic given by Winther is boredom!
Whenever I was bored as a kid, my mom would always tell me: āintelligent people donāt get boredā. Well, thatās not true at all, but I know why she said that. She wanted me to be more self-sufficient, or she didnāt bother to care.
Cambridge dictionary defines bored as: āfeeling unhappy because something is not interesting or because you have nothing to do.ā
I agree with this definition, but I would also add āfeeling lostā. Because what happens when youāre bored? Youāre sad, apathetic even. Your mind wanders and yearns for something to do.
However, I am in the same situation as George. I donāt remember when I was truly bored. I get bored of movies, activities, but I donāt even use the word āboringā. I just say the movie or the thing is not interesting.
But back to the issue of never getting bored.
My daily social media screen time averages probably around 30minutes a day. However, I watch YouTube for an average of 2h a day, and if Iām not watching it actively, I put playing it in the background, I lay down and listen. This leads to me being never bored, because if Iām not busy with studying or errands, rest (without any distractions like music or videos playing) feels productive and not boring.
Also, Iām very observant. I love my trait, I love observing. It contributes to why I never feel truly bored. If youāre at the restaurant with me, feel seen. I see you, and I judge.
Same as George, I sometimes come to the realisation that my own mind is slowly rotting away. Always consuming some content, leads to the dwindling of my mind. That was one of the reasons to start this blog. To find my own thoughts again. Not only to sort otherās opinions between I agree and I disagree.
Always having content to watch in your pocket facilitates the demise of your own thoughts. Put your fucking phone down when youāre commuting or waiting in the queue for longer than 10 seconds. Find yourself more often.
